Almost every serious injury in this trade is a ladder, and almost every one of those is somebody clearing their own troughs on a wet or icy day. If the troughs are frozen, do not climb and do not chip at the ice — it comes away in heavy pieces and it takes the fascia with it. And never put salt in an eavestrough: it will damage the trough, the fasteners and whatever is planted below.

  2. Strip the old system and inspect the fascia underneath, which is often the real problem
  3. Hang the new run to a deliberate slope, not level
  4. Set downspouts to discharge well clear of the foundation and off any walkway
